The mastery of silence

When I was an active lawyer and columnist — whose
trade was verbal in both cases — I deemed myself to
be superior in most deliberative fora. And it was only
at near-deaf 84 that I realized one learns best and errs
least through the mastery of his silence.

So now it can be supposed that the late Gene Magsay-
say’s quip “No talk, no mistake” might have been meant
to be serious and not comical.
