Grace is God’s choice

RRoy’siPadGrace is God’s choice
Ronald Roy — May 3, 2016

It was steaming humid in Aling Nena’s tiny living room, but lessening my discomfort were a swiveling fan, her velvety voice and engaging smile. Over the past thirty years or so, I have seen Aling Nena over a dozen times for psychic readings, and wow, who can doubt a blind seeress, now 75, who reads with stunning accuracy one’s life, including the exact locations of the moles on his body ?!

With religious images stacked up on the wall behind her, and a deck of tarot cards spread out over her desk, she said (as translated from Tagalog), “Hello, Mr. Roy! You’ve come for a political reading, right? Please sit down and, as usual, concentrate on the images with your hands rested on the desk palms down.” After I did as instructed, she laid her hands on mine, then lowered her head eyes closed.

After a while, she raised her head with eyebrows furrowed, then somberly whispered, “Grace is God’s choice, but she faces problems posed by dark forces led by a former cigar-chomping president in military uniform. They are supporting a bad candidate.

“The voters must pray hard for wisdom, for enlightenment, so that they can see Grace’s character, strength, courage and sense of duty shining through. Born parentless, she has been bullied and mocked for so long, but with the voters’ prayers she can beat the enemy with a slingshot. If they do not supplicate, heaven will not interfere in the wayward exercise of their free will, and they must suffer the dire consequences of their wrong choices.

“Today’s turmoil of inequality and greed shall not be assuaged by the succeeding presidency, but at least with Grace at the helm, it will not worsen. All must help her.”

Aling Nena was at her clairvoyant best as she picked the questions out of my mind; and without a shred of doubt she was referring to former Pres. Fidel V. Ramos (FVR), the Manong Eddie whom I met sometime during the early 60’s, and for whom I ghostwrote two speeches when he became president.

Sometime last January, a cabinet member of FVR told me the “organization” of the former president had just started an intensive campaign for the foulmouthed presidential candidate, Rodrigo Duterte. He also stressed with a wink, “Ronnie, we’ll be springing back to power soon.” Power, power, power, I mulled, is this all these trapos (traditional politicians) hanker for?!

Anyway, it appears that FVR’s group was the factor that moved Duterte up to first place on the survey ratings in the first two weeks this April, and further up to where he now stands, as of this writing on April 28, statiscally uncatchable with a 14% edge over Grace Poe with 6% undecided. Yes, the formidable “organization” must be the huge “Goliath” who stands in the way of the small “David” represented by Grace.

In a Duterte presidency, FVR will certainly have a big say on national security issues. For instance, how would a softie like him — he on whose advice the RAM rebels were punished with twenty pushups after critically wounding Pres. Cory’s son during a coup staged against her, and one who’s never experienced any military front-line action — handle the worsening ISIS and China problems? Advice Pres. Duterte to confront them with rosaries and flowers?

But of course Duterte will not do that because — and here’s a bigger problem: he is FVR’s exact opposite, being a self-admitted summary executioner of criminals. Have you seen any of his infomercials? They’re all about “salvaging” criminals, meaning: executing them without due process.

With respect to the menace of ISIS and other international terrorist groups, he had no definitive plan for dealing with them. And as for the China problem, he says he will go the Panatag shoal and thereon plant a Philippine flag proclaiming out loud: “Hoy, this is our territory!”, and if he gets killed in the process, “so be it…he he he…well, I’ve always wanted to be a hero anyway”! Good Lord, unless I’m dreaming or a providential event intervenes, a buffoon may well be our next president!

A head of state is capable if he can forge peaceful, cultural and commercial relations between our country and other nations. Duterte, the crude harlequin who threatens to represent us on the world stage, will be an international embarrassment because of his puerile behavior and bawdy language. Indeed, this man can be a danger to world peace!

Duterte’s political advantage is that he naturally blends with the hoi polloi. You look at him, and immediately you know he is not an aristocrat. He looks like them, and walks, speaks and cusses like them. He says he passionately hates crime, corruption and drugs, and so do they. He promises that, as president, he will order criminals “to stop”, and if they don’t, he will shoot them down on the spot — and his listeners, so sick and tired of crime, corruption and drugs, lustily applaud.

But wait, if he truly hates corruption, how come he allegedly owns bank accounts totaling some 211 million pesos which he did not report in his 2014 SALN? If he owns no such bank accounts, the Bank of Philippine Islands can say so. But the bank is mum on Sen. Sonny Trillianes’ exposè, choosing to abide by the bank secrecy law. Hmmm…where and how did the “honest” city mayor from Davao get all that money?

Incidentally, by his own admission, Duterte was never a good student. In grade school, he regularly copied from his seat mates, and in high school, he once shot a campus bully who was, luckily, merely wounded. Another negative: at the last presidential debate held in Pangasinan, he was not at all articulate, and he showed nary a concern for other serious national problems. Intellectual deficiency?

Once, when stumped by a question, Duterte quelled the embarrassing moment when he said (or joked) he would “just copy from the platforms of Ma’m Miriam and Grace”.The audience found that charmingly childlike. They also found cute his threat to sever diplomatic ties with America and Australia when those countries’ ambassadors each made a diplomatic comment on that atrociously ribald rape joke.

OMG, we could yet be thrown into a state of global isolation, or find ourselves without allies when facing an external aggression! Did the guy really go to school? And if and when he becomes president, and the turmoil worsens as predicted by Aling Nena, can his supporters say that their voice was the voice of God?

Duterte has an utter disdain for Man’s law against murder, for God’s Commandment Thou shalt not kill, for basic courtesies to the weaker sex, and for good manners and right conduct, and these negatives will exacerbate the turmoil that Aling Nena sees in her psychic mind. I’m somewhat psychic myself, but let me tell you this: the seeress has never failed to stun me, and when she gave a figurative definition of Grace, did I have the goosebumps!!

Grace has maintained her composure through all the insults thrown at her; she’s got character. She is frail-looking, but then: “strength is made from weakness” (II Corinthians. XX. 9). And as for courage, what courage shines through brighter than her will to fight a behemoth of a giant with a slingshot? And finally, although Grace may know that she could lose, she seeks the highest office as a matter of a sense of duty: to pursue the pro-poor advocacy of her adoptive father, the late Fernando “Ronnie” Poe, Jr.
