Ronald Roy — Sept. 16, 2015

I recently had lunch with some septuagenarian friends who, like some pseudo political analysts of whom I count myself as one, regaled themselves with outlandish theories and scenarios regarding P-Noy’s rumored (natural?) fascination with power, its abundant perks and its being ego-inflating, along with its assurances against imprisonment.
“And that’s why everybody wants to be president”, said one of them, “only to seek ways, if only in mind, to be president forever, and P-Noy is no exception.” Then, they asked me to write a musical parody similar to my old work titled HER WAY — a hilarious dig at former Pres. Macapagal Arroyo who did things her way. I replied that, under the prevailing circumstances, “no elections” or “snap elections” would be extremely unlikely, ‘though I’d try anyway in the spirit of comic relief.

Snap election?
An interesting backgrounder is how I met Frank Sinatra in 1966 at the Waldorf Astoria, NYC. To him, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop and three others, I sang a cappella “September of My Years” and my spoof titled “Stranglers in the Night” that had them rolling in stitches. As they left, he stopped at the door to tell me that I sounded like him when he was 31, and that what added to his curiosity was that I was a lawyer and not a professional singer. Well, I happened to be 31 then. But that’s another story….a long one.
Anyway, with my apologies to composer Paul Anka and the blue-eyed Chairman of the Board, here now is my playful parody titled I WILL RUN AGAIN, to be sung to the melody of LET ME TRY AGAIN.

I KNOW I SAID THAT I WAS LEAVING / BUT GOSH, CAN’T LEAVE MY YELLOW FRIENDS / IT WAS ONLY SELF-DECEIVING / TO SLIP AWAY FROM SYCOPHANTS WHO WALKED THE ROADS LIKE ELEPHANTS / THEY STEPPED ON ALL ALONG THE WAY / THEY ATE AND DRANK WITH ME EACH DAY

I WILL RUN AGAIN / I WILL RUN AGAIN / I WILL SURELY GIVE THEM MORE / MORE THAN EVERMORE / WE WILL HAVE IT ALL / THEY AND I AGAIN / IT’S THE BUDGET WE WILL SHARE / YES I WILL RUN AGAIN

I WAS SUCH A FOOL TO DOUBT THEM / TO TRY AND GO IT ALL ALONE / WE’LL NOW START TO WORK TOGETHER / WE’LL USE THE PORK AND SPREAD THE SHARES, THEY’LL QUESTION US, BUT HECK, WHO CARES?! / POOR MAR CAN’T MOVE UP FROM THE TRAP / WE’RE LOST UNLESS WE DO A SNAP

‘PAGLALABAN PA / ANG DAANG MA’TWID / I WILL GIVE THEM ALL THEY NEED / ‘DI ‘MAN ‘KO MANHID / PCOS WILL PREVAIL / THAT’S WHY WE CAN’T FAIL / WE’LL UNITE COME SHINE OR RAIN / YES I WILL RUN AGAIN

Salus populi
In the hands of the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) may rest an improved quality of life for Filipinos under the next presidency. We will be electing a new president in June next year, and quo warranto proceedings are being conducted by the SET to determine if Sen. Grace Poe is a natural born citizen. By the time you’re reading this, the SET may have already ruled on the allegation that Sen. Poe is not qualified to run for president because she is not a natural born Filipino citizen.
Adjudications by the Supreme Court are never made with the exactitude of numbers sciences, and that’s why it’s composed of 15 men and women learned in the LAW. Unanimous decisions are infrequent, each magistrate breathing into each resolution the soul, mind and heart that are uniquely his or hers. In this light, the answers they search for can be evasive, unless they are united in their raison d’ être (reason for being magistrates) — which is: rendering justice that serves best the welfare of the sovereign people, who are the creator of their offices and positions, and the giver of their salaries, perks, etcetera.
So also should this be the case for other bodies, judicial or quasi-judicial, like the SET. May the SET’s three SC associate justices and six senators be guided by the doctrine of salus populi est suprema lex ( the welfare of the people is the supreme law) in their search for a just decision in Poe’s disqualification case. This they can do by finding it in their wisdom to resolve all doubts in favor of the people’s welfare.

Startlers
— The Liberal Party is airing the argument that Poe should team up with Roxas in a strategy to boost the latter’s chances for the presidency, and thus prevent Binay from becoming president. The trouble with this move is that a Mar presidency will ensure passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law.
— At the height of Kuala Lumpur’s daily street demonstrations demanding the resignation of Malaysia’s prime minister over a bank account worth US $ 700 in his name, the official mind-bogglingly explained that the money was a donation from a Middle East country “to secure realty interests outside of Malaysia.” Hmmm…here’s hoping that this unease does not flare up into a major confrontation between Malaysia and the Philippines.
