Foul tactics
Ronald Roy — Aug. 12, 2015

The Law is always partial to the weak, the infirm, the impoverished, and the defenseless. This is a fundamental principle that has been observed since the beginning of time, and renegades are those who have dared to desecrate this doctrine. What about “foundlings”, aren’t they among the weak and defenseless that deserve the aegis of the Law? Aren’t they buccaneers who claim that “Sen. Grace Poe is disqualified from running for a higher office because she is not a natural-born Filipino citizen for having been a foundling, and therefore is stateless?”
A foundling is “an infant found after its unknown parents have abandoned it.” Merriam-Webster) This is the pathetic story of Grace, the runaway favorite in the 2016 presidential derby who, as of this writing, has yet to formally announce her interest in vying for either the presidency or vice presidency. And as she keeps everybody guessing, already she’s being lampooned from all sides, more particularly from the camp of Vice President Jejomar Binay.

The argument
The Binay camp, represented by a columnist who is, can you believe, an Opus Dei devotee and a former senator, argues that Grace is not a Filipino, and therefore cannot run for a higher office, because — under jus sanguinis (the law of the blood), the mode of acquiring citizenship from the parents — she is “stateless” since the citizenship of either parent has never been established.
Grace Poe is a victim of circumstances through no fault of hers, and she has to be penalized for this? Worse: the public clamor for her to succeed the president is loud and clear, and the sovereign people (i.e., the highest authority, even higher than the Constitution) will be denied on a technicality?
What is so difficult about according her Filipino citizenship, there being no clarity from either law or jurisprudence? After all, she was born here, studied here, nursed friendships here and lived here, didn’t she? Why split technical hairs in order to snatch her from the sovereign people’s embrace, if not for one’s own political aggrandizement?
Why cruelly deny her the benefit of a legal doubt? Clearly, below-the-belt shots can come only from trailing candidates, and that’s even counterproductive because more such shots will sympathetically hasten her sprint to the finish line. Stupid!

Mar-Noynoy tandem
According to some Liberal Party and Coalition insiders, the Yellows are in almost total disarray because all their well-planned hoopla notwithstanding, presidential preference polls show that Mar Roxas’ position has remained virtually static, i.e., trailing way behind Grace and VP Binay, and remaining slightly ahead of tail-ender Rod Duterte.
Their despair and gloom reflect what I once wrote: Aquino would anoint Roxas knowing full well he would never win, and that’s why as of this writing he hasn’t formally offered anything to Grace. He’s hoping she will not be Mar’s running mate so he can himself team up with him. Well, Mr. President, that’s a dastardly act because it’s your bosses and the Law you’re trifling with. Well, I don’t suppose your dictatorial mind can accept this, but please listen anyway.
The Constitution prohibits you from exercising executive power by limiting your term of office to six years. Running for vice president may then be taken to mean you’re attempting to circumvent the prohibition because, without meaning to alarm Mar, as vice president, you can be acting president at appropriate events, or even become president…such as when an act of God creates a vacancy in the presidency.

Selective justice
Former Senate President often warned us of the administration’s regime of “selective justice”, and it’s beginning to be clear he was right after all. Yes, selective justice galore is being served…courtesy of Injustice Secretary Leila de Lima and Mar’s lackey, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales.
Selective justice initially reared its ugly head on the jailing of opposition stalwarts Sen. Pres. Juan Ponce Enrile, Sen. Bong Revilla, and Sen. Estrada, and the reign of terror has escalated since. The so-called “third batch” of the pork barrel scam list of those sought to be charged, as released by De Lima, is headed by only one senator, Gringo Honasan, and he happens to be an opposition leader!
But what about the more than 200 legislators cited in the list of prosecution witness Benhur Luy? Square with us, girls, aren’t you planning to create a hole in the dragnet in order to facilitate their escape? I know you owe your appointments to P-Noy, but then your fealty to the Lawyer’s Oath ends where your loyalty to him begins, right?
Don’t your disorganized yellow confreres realize that the more they wreak foul tactics on Grace and one another, the clearer their slogan emerges as a baluktot na daan (crooked path)?
